Close to the park is the picturesque village of Cheddar, full of things for all your family to do. Within the village there is a leisure centre, riding stables, fishing and a golf driving range. Sailing, potholing and caving activities are available nearby. There are numerous pubs, restaurants and cafes to enjoy local food and ale. Cheddar cheese originated from this village and you can still see history in the making at the Cheddar Gorge Cheese Company in the heart of the village. Keeping the traditional art of Cheddar making alive, they are the only cheese makers left in Cheddar, with a shop and visitor centre for you to enjoy.

Opposite the park is Cheddar Reservoir designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its wintering waterfowl population. Recreational activities at the reservoir include sailing, windsurfing, angling and bird watching. There is a permitted access path for walking around the perimeter; however dogs must be kept on a lead.

Cheddar caves and gorge are a spectacular tourist attraction with plenty to do above and below ground. The towering limestone cliffs of Britain’s biggest gorge make it a natural showpiece and in the larger caves, visitors can see stalactites and stalagmites and fantastic rock formations. These include Cox's Cave and Gough's Cave where the remains of the famous Cheddar Man , Britain’s oldest complete skeleton, were found. Nearby are Wookey Hole and Ebbor Gorge. Wookey Hole Caves are on the outskirts of Wells and the site has show caves, a paper mill and a museum. For the walker and rambler, the gorge provides numerous signposted paths and nature trails and climbing to the tops of the cliffs to give stunning views of the Mendips and the surrounding countryside.

It is only a short drive to the coast where the traditional, yet vibrant seaside resorts of Burnham on Sea and Weston-super-Mare offer miles of sandy beaches. Larger shopping centres within easy reach are Bath, Bridgwater, Bristol, Glastonbury, Street and Wells, which is England's smallest City where you can see the Bishop's Palace and Cathedral.

The Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty provides a stunning family holiday destination. Catering for every type of visitor, whether you wish to visit the traditional picturesque towns and villages, vibrant coastal resorts or enjoy challenging sports in breathtaking scenery, Somerset will not disappoint.
